the 18 part is for credit card purchases from them and does not affect a retail account bought from a store.

Keep in mind, though, that since the game is rated Teen, you do have to be 13 or older in order to play.

To be honest the T rating (PEGI 12+ in Europe) means nothing in my opinion.

It doesn't take into account the actions of other players. For example, although swearing is against the rules there is always some immature little brat who thinks "u ****in ghey n00b" or comments of a lewd/perverted nature is forever called for. On top of that there are also other dangers which I won't go into (to try and keep within the rules of this forum). Hence this clause in the GW EULA

It could be, but in my opinion, it's probably more due to the mature nature of the game itself. ANet cannot really control, nor is it expected to control, the behavior of people in-game. The fact that they actually do shows due diligence on their part. I think the Teen rating has more to do with the ale-drinking, 15k-druid's-clad, pole-dancing female ranger than anything else

There's a law that states that it's illegal to collect information on children under 13 years old.

Of course, it isn't enforced. Otherwise, the internet would die out.

Is there really? I haven't heard of that one. Is that in the US or somewhere else or is it universal?

And does ANet actually collect information on you?

US only, probably. Europeans are weirdos.

If someone sends in to support a screenshot where you say "im 10", then ArenaNet could theoetically ban you.

This practice is quite common on kid-oriented sites like MySpace and Neopets.

COPPA Laws

Used all over the internet, especially when signing up for message boards.

Yes, the Age Laws are there....but whether you follow them is a "trust" thing..

Like when you sign up for a forum like this one...How easy is it just to tap the option that says your over 13...They have NO WAY of enforcing it - its more of a liability thing (if it does come out that the kid is under 13, the forum can say "we were told it his over 13...Cant touch us").

Same thing with the 18 or over clause in the Agreement. Like if you go into the store and steal your moms credit card to buy a Character slot, and your mom trys to sue Anet for letting a kid use the credit card, they can say "Hey, you cant touch us, by making an account they agreed that they were over 18 and able to enter into contracts like that"

well, i agree with that rule.

1- character drunk = results as a drunk 12 year old
2- wammos humping eles = teenagers "harrassing" girls at schools
3- someone cursing and insuling from behind screen= a beaten up teenager who forgot that hes not Unonimus and invincible

i wont even start with exposure to cursing and violence...

you all might think its all BS but all thos elittle think "print" themselves on a "virgin" mind of a 10 year old and effect his behavioir in future

When I /dance on guildwars, I don't get the urge to go and hump the leg of the nearest female. Neither do most sane individuals.

Plus, if under 18s weren't allowed accounts, Guild Wars' primary audience of sweaty adolescents like myself would be gone and they would lose sales.

One other thing about the 18 year old clause. I don't believe that people under that age can legally agree to contracts, and thats what an EULA is.

I doubt that you're gonna get banned for not being over 18. Anyway, if you have even a little bit of supervision or anything like that I doubt Anet would take action. Besides, don't tell anyone and they won't know

Anet can't collect information from you, at the end of the day your someone behind a computer screen, you could be a 27 year old lady called Eva or you could be a 47 year old trucker called Barry, you keep as private as you want to be, at the end of the day no-one is going to know anything about you without you telling them.

GW is easily suitable for the younger children, you can have a very picky chat filter on to protect the innocent. By younger children i am not referring to allowing 6 year olds to play it but i mean sort of around 10+ or whatever.
